Story 129

My employer merged with another company. Two employees from each team were made redundant, me being one of them. We were all scored and I received a low score that didn’t seem right as I was one of the most senior. I was offered a redundancy package and asked to sign an NDA. I refused and the CEO rang me at home and said “that if I didn’t sign it he would ensure that I never worked in the City again”. I employed a solicitor, took my case to a tribunal and won.

No Company has the right to control individuals. There are so many bullies. It made me a stronger person, and I continued to have a successful career in the City.

Ten years later I was unfortunately diagnosed with a brain tumour and needed time to attend hospital appointments etc.. The Team Leader (a young male) refused when I asked to work from home (before Covid), asked me to work longer hours to make up time etc. His bullying continued after my op when I returned to work. I complained about his bullying and was made redundant (due to performance)?? I was then asked to sign an NDA. I again refused, and contacted ACAS who drafted a document to my employer asking them to sign that my redundancy was not performance related. Fighting for your career particularly as a woman is not easy. I continue to work to ensure other women enjoy a happy and healthy career.

It is absolutely amazing the work that Zelda and the team have pushed to eradicate NDA’s. The Employment Rights Bill is a welcome relief for those who have suffered.
